Inverted Nipple Reconstruction

Repair of Nipple Inversion

Inverted nipples are occasionally a source of personal insecurity, but are rarely a cause of functional impairment.  In fact, sensation and breast feeding are still generally present  in inverted nipples.  For those who are troubled by these symptoms, a simple surgical option is available.  The correction of nipple inversion can be achieved under local anesthesia, and today’s techniques provide a natural and permanent solution.

Surgical Correction of Inverted Nipples

Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or sedation depending upon a patient’s preference.  A small incision at the base of the nipple is created while the nipple is in a projected state. Then a gentle devision of adhesions is performed beneath the nipple.

Once the fibers are divided and the nipple is everted into a normal position special sutures are placed inside the nipple.  Sutures add stability and strength to the base of the nipple and help it to retain its outward projection. The sutures are dissolvable, so sutures will not require later removal.

A stent  holds the nipple in place and ensures that it will heal in its everted position.
